MERIDEN -- The first sign that things were going Ned Lamont's way came early, when Tom Swan, his campaign manager, meandered through the press room at the Four Points Sheraton hotel in shorts and sandals, a baseball cap turned backward, looking like he hadn't a care in the world.

The Meriden campaign headquarters were across the street, but Swan didn't feel any need to be there. 'It's better if we stay out of their way,' he said. 'We have a phenomenal team.'
