"ROME - Prime Minister Romano Prodi's center-left coalition appeared poised late Monday to retain its grip on several major cities in mayoral races across Italy.

Two days of balloting that ended Monday to choose mayors across Italy and a governor in Sicily came just weeks after April general elections in which Prodi's forces narrowly defeated the conservatives of Silvio Berlusconi, snatching the premiership from the media mogul.

According to projections by the NEXUS institute shown on state-run TV RAI, Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni was to garner 61 percent of the vote, compared to 37 for Gianni Alemanno, a right-wing candidate who served as Berlusconi's agriculture minister. In Turin and Naples, incumbent center-left mayors also appeared to have won re-election in the first round."
